Research suggests that not only can chiropractic relieve sports injuries, it may even give you a competitive edge. A study published in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics shows regular chiropractic neck adjustments can improve grip strength. The findings could have important implications for athletes in racquet sports, martial arts, or baseball.
The study included 18 professional judo athletes who were treated with either chiropractic care or a placebo treatment. The force of grip strength was measured by a hydraulic dynamometer immediately before and after each treatment. The study authors specifically evaluated grip strength, since martial arts rely on robust upper body strength. Treatment consisted of three chiropractic cervical spinal manipulation, or chiropractic neck adjustments. The chiropractic patients experienced statistically significant improvements in grip strength, while the placebo treatment produced no significant effects. On average, chiropractic patients had a 10% improvement in strength on their right side, and 16% improvement on their left.
"The statistically significant increase in the grip strength observed in both hands on group might be due to the already-observed SMT effects in inducing vertebral motion with concomitant spine nerve root responses and increase in muscle strength," the researchers wrote. The study authors also pointed to earlier findings suggesting that spinal manipulation can increase quadriceps strength, as well as enhance neuromuscular reflex.
